Zdzisław Beksiński

Zdzisław Beksiński

Having quickly risen to being one of my favourite artists, renowned for his surrealist and post-apocalyptic style in painting, photography and fantasy art. I find his paintings both enthralling and disturbing, which i attribute to the intricacies in his art, the amount of detail that can be seen, but also the vagueness, backgrounds blur together leaving a fog that the imagination is forced to fill. This serves to further exhibit the detail in the foreground.

One recurring theme that i adore in his paintings is the repetition and distortion of anatomy. It gives the paintings a sense of foreboding, that perhaps what the viewer is shown was once human, that it wasn't always like this but something awful made it this way. Or on the other side that they are perversions of humanity, or what we are on the inside.

This piece, like the majority of his later works were never titled, but has become known as
"The Flute".
The hands are intricate and beautifully painted, instantly drawing your eye towards them. The light from above provides long dark shadows over the face and highlighting the hands.

The repeating anatomy and wonderful composition and colour is something i would love to be able to include in my 3D works. Either through careful sculpting and perhaps creating an environment , or maybe including the 3D renders in a digital painting, combining different digital mediums.
